Archbishop opens student hostel
John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, was guest of honour at the opening of The Lodge on East Hertford Street in Cambridge, a new student hostel building. The hostel was built by Link House Trust, a registered charity which has been providing accommodation and a friendly welcome to international, post-graduate students in Cambridge for more than 20 years.
The Lodge, designed by Archangel and constructed by Coulson Building Group, pro-vides the Trust with a further 9 rooms and a guest room, together with a communal liv-ing room, dining room and kitchen. The 3 storey building replaced a single house and makes much efficient use of the plot. The project was completed early and well within the budget.
Speaking at the opening alongside the Mayor of Cambridge Cllr Russ McPherson, Dr Sentamu, who is of Ugandan origin, recalled his time as an international student in Cambridge, and the lasting value of the relationships forged during that time. He said:
"I want to congratulate all those who have worked so hard to make this lovely new building possible... This is a place where cultural barriers are broken down – often with plenty of laughter!”
